Just incase any of you don't know this crazy canadian, here is a picture of
him to scare you all:

Scary huh, Ok. Now time for the interview!
TRM: Welcome Derina.
DerianX: EEk! Don't sneak up on me! I mean.. Hi! :]
TRM: Since when and how long you have been in the Deus
Ex community?
DerianX: Hmmm... I bought the game around July 2000, I've been playing
the multiplayer part since December 2000, and I started mapping in March 2001.
TRM: How did you find us? :)
DerianX: I opened a box of Lucky Charms one day and found an encrypted
note, so I decrypted it and it said "Follow the peanuts to freedom."
I never realized it was a trap. I was looking for a good strategic FPS and a
friend who worked in a computer store suggested Deus Ex. I took his advise and
bought the game. After I beat the game I tried to poke around with the editor
(unsuccesfully). A few weeks later I found out about the MP patch, so I downloaded
it. I decided to give the editor another go a few weeks later and found my way
to #DXEditing.
TRM: Have you been to other communities? How much does our community
differ from others?
DerianX: I've peeked at some other communities from afar. C&C, UT
(mainly for its relevance to DX), BF1942. I haven't become involved in any other
community enough to compare.
TRM: I have known you for a while now, you're also a hard
worker and have many dreams for the community. What keeps you staying in this
community?
DerianX: Well, there are a number of things. This has been my first experience
as part of an online community, so there will always be sentiments there. The
game itself doesn't captivate me like it used though. I still consider DXMp
to be one of the best MP games out there for style and uniquity. It's not your
typical mindless shooter like quake or Serious Sam. Overall though, the main
thing that keeps me in this community is the friends I've made and the people
I've met.
TRM: Have you made any mods or maps for other games?
DerianX: I suppose, if you count the level editor for console games (like
the course editor for the old Nintendo classic, Excitebike). I also tried to
make a RPG using a program called OHRrpgCE (http://www.hamsterrepublic.com/ohrrpgce),
but never really got too far along. Deus Ex is the first game I've actually
made anything usefull for.
TRM: Do you have a current Deus Ex project you are working on at
the moment?
DerianX: Yes and no. As you know I'm the Site Administrator of DXEditing.com,
as well as Founding Administrator of DXLeague.com. The lack of community interest
in both editing and league-style play (for multiplayer) have cause both site
to really become stagnate. I'll admit that my enthusiasm isn't what it used
to be, no matter how much I wish it was.
TRM: What are your future plans for DXEditing.com and/or the community?
DerianX: I'm not sure. I love DXEditing.com, but I don't have the passion
I used to, and as great as Deus Ex 2 looks, it hasn't got me excited. As cool
as the single player aspect of this game is, it's the multiplayer aspect that
I love, and with no multiplayer support for part 2 in the plans, I'm not sure
what I'll do.
TRM: Where does 'DerianX' come from?
DerianX: Somewhere around ten years ago my best friend got this fancy
28.8k dialup connection (ooooh). At that time Hotmail was relatively new, and
we decided to sign up for free accounts. I was a fan of the TV show "Sailor
Moon" at the time, so I decided to use the name "Derian", based
on a character from the show (Prince Darien, I didn't know the right spelling
back then). I tried to register "derian@hotmail.com" but it was already
taken, so I figured I'd slap an X on the end, and it was available. I've stuck
with the name since.
TRM: What has impressed you the most in the community?
DerianX: The wide variety of personalities and their commitment to this
game.
TRM: Would you be able to explain to us your old projects for Deus
Ex? How many maps and mods have you made?
DerianX: Well, I guess it all started back in April 2001 when I started
making a map called "Motor Inn". It took me less than a week to make
and turned out slightly better than terrible. Since then I've made BattleZone,
Orius, Battlefield, Cyraxx, Nucleus, Titanium and Outpost. These are all multiplayer
maps mind you. I also published a mod called "MeetingPlace" for which
all credit really belongs to my good buddy carone (great guy), he did all the
coding and put together one heck of a demo map for the mod. On the SP side of
things I spent a good deal of time as a member of the mod "Vampire"
for which I did very little (sorry damo). Also, I temporarily joined Skyward
Fires for which I did next to nothing (sorry Kami). I wanted to do more but
the single player mapping just doesn't motivate me.
TRM: What do you think will became of the future for the community?
DerianX: he game becomes more and more stale by the day. There is very
little "fresh blood" that comes into the game. Everyone is a gritty
veteran who has played the same five default maps 1000 times. More players are
leaving than coming in. Despite the community effort to keep the game alive,
there is nearly no outside support from anyone, least of all the developer.
I'm not one to bash Ion Storm, they made a great game, but they let a lot of
people down. The multiplayer patch appears only be a "bonus" to help
sell GOTY edition. Ion really could have made DXMP into a phenomenal hit. Compared
to developers like ID, Epic, and Valve, Ion Storm really let its supporters
down.
TRM: Looking forward to Deus Ex 2? :)
DerianX: As a game, yes. As an experience, I don't know yet.
TRM: ASL?!?!?!!!1
DerianX: OMG! 25/M/Canada!~
TRM: Do you like peanuts?
DerianX: Not really, I prefer cashews (although I LOVE Reeces candy).
Which leaves more peanuts for you.
TRM: OK, thats it. I ran out of peanuts, so I guess thats it. Thank
you for your time DerianX!
DerianX: Okay. =]
TRM: Oh, have anything else to say to the people?
DerianX: I'd just like to thank my friends for being friends (you know
who you are). I'd like to thank guys like BigCountry, slicer, you (TRM), downTime
(aka NoControl), CoMpUdOc, carone, etc, etc, etc for all the work they've put
into this community over the years.
TRM: OK, good. Go away now.
DerianX: =] Okay. Hope it was okay.
TRM: Hell it wasnt, you're so boring
DerianX: Sorry. :'(
TRM: Now Iknow why you haven't been interviewed before.
DerianX: You wub me though, so its ok.
TRM: yeeeeah
* TRM hugs DerianX
DerianX: :D -8
