Articles :: Interviews :: Swateam (09/30/2001)

1. First of all just tell the readers who you are and what you do on the SwaTeam mod.
OK, my name is Seppo Hansen Washuus, I live in Denmark and I'm the lead designer for SwaTeaM. I also do model animation, skining and a little mapping.

2. So tell us about SwaTeam; what sort of mod is it.
SwaTeam will be a team based multiplayer game with real world weapons. You will be able to choose from different characters; a ranger, a radio man, a swat guy, and a sniper - all with difrent skills.

3. So it's a bit of a cross between TFC and CS then?
Yes.

4. Doesn't that bother you a little that people may jump to the conclusion that it's just another clone? What makes your mod original?
Yes, it does bother me a bit, but SwaTeaM will have more missions like maps. Also I think the difrent characters that you can choose will add much gameplay to it; now you need to work together with your team more. For example, you first send in a sniper to cover, then a radio man to tell the team what to do and then the rangers and swat will go in.

5. Sounds good. So what sort of new weapons and maps have you got planned for us?
Ooooh, we've got many weapons. So far I count 36. One of the cool things is that the weapons that the terroist can buy are all difrent to the SWAT weapons; that means around 18 weapons on both sides.
On the map side i can't say much: no maps are finished.

6. Well, looking at the screenshots on your site the team has obviously been working hard. What sort of timescale are we looking at before the public can get their hands on your baby?
Well I think it will be in december.

7. Still a couple of months off then. I notce that the "gear" section on the site is empty. What do you have planned in that area?
Armor vests and maybe C4 to blow up doors. Maybe also different clothes.

8. There's obviously something about the Deus Ex engine that made you decide to use that as opposed to just sticking with UT. Are you planning to use a variation on the augs of the original game or is there something else?
Actually I just loved DX and wanted to make something better then the DX multiplayer, so no augs are planned.

9. Well, as that's nicely brought us back to the subject of DXMP, does it worry you at all that DXMP seems to be losing players as people turn to other games? Do you think it might cause the mod to have less of an impact than it deserves?
I hope not, but maybe people will come back if SwaTeam is good. :)

10. Heh. Good answer. Would you consider converting the mod to SP if it didn't make it as a MP mod?
Hmmm. Time will show.

11. Fair enough. Well, I think that about wraps it up for now. Before we finish is there anything you would like to say to the community?
I would like to give thanks to the support we get, and to all the other mods out there: looks good, very good.

12. Well, thanks for taking time out to speak to us. Now get back to work and get us that mod out ASAP :)
lol. OK.

Oh, one more thing.
Yes?
A BIG thanks to geordie for the milkshape-DeuxEx exporter.

13. OK, will put that in. BTW, any exclusive screenies you could give us :)
Yeah I do, here they are, enjoy! :)

We'd like to thank God's Mercenary for his time and wish him luck with finishing SwaTeam. Also everyone should visit the site ([Censored]/swateam), NOW!!! Go. That's an order. /me loads GEP meaningfully.
