Deus Ex :: Help Center :: Skills Guide

In Deus Ex, you have eleven basic skills that you can use to develop your character.  This guide will provide you with the details of each skill.

Computers

Computers are everywhere in the world of Deus Ex.  You can use computers to get email, manipulate security systems, look around a level through cameras, and to get money.  That is, if you have the skill to hack them.

Level Description Points Req.
UNTRAINED You can use public terminals to read news and access security systems if you know the login and password. N/A
TRAINED You gain the ability to hack ATMs, personal computers, and security consoles.  You can only enter a system for a brief period of time however.   1125
ADVANCED You gain the ability to control automated gun turrets.  You can hack into a system faster and take control of it for a longer time before being detected. 2250
MASTER Nothing is safe.  You are an elite hacker who owns any system he comes into contact with.   3750

Electronics

This skill applies to bypassing electronic devices through the use of Multitools.  By increasing your level of skill, you can bypass security systems faster and more efficiently.  You can tamper with control panels, disable cameras and alarm buttons, and bypass keypads to open doors.

Level Description Points Req.
UNTRAINED You can use Multitools to bypass security systems. N/A
TRAINED Your ability to tamper with electronics is slightly increased. 1800
ADVANCED You receive another slight increase in efficiency. 3600
MASTER What security systems? 6000

Environmental
There will be times when you will be in hazardous situations.  You will need to know how to use Hazmat Suits, Ballistic Armor, Thermoptic Camo, and Rebreathers more than once during the game.

Level Description Points Req.
UNTRAINED You can use the above items. N/A
TRAINED These items will provide slightly more protection and can be used a bit longer. 675
ADVANCED Another slight increase in duration and protection. 1350
MASTER These are merely another layer of skin for you. 2250

Lockpicking

An art for the patient.  You may choose to pick the lock on a door rather than finding a key or another way around.  You can usually blow a door in with a LAM, but that won't provide for a silent approach.

Level Description Points Req.
UNTRAINED You are trained in the use of Lockpicks but are rather inefficient when using them. N/A
TRAINED You can pick locks more efficiently. 1800
ADVANCED Another efficiency increase, less Lockpicks are needed to do the job. 3600
MASTER There's no such thing as a locked door to you. 6000

Medicine

Face it, you will take a bullet now and then or fall a little farther than you thought you would.  Knowledge of human physiology will allow you to use the already scarce Medkits to their full healing potential.

Level Description Points Req.
UNTRAINED You can use Medkits to heal small cuts and bruises. N/A
TRAINED Your healing abilities increase and your vulnerability to toxins decreases. 900
ADVANCED Medkits repair even more damages, you are highly resistant to poisons. 1800
MASTER You could transplant your own organs if necessary. 3000

Swimming

This is a lesser used skill, but a useful one nonetheless.  There will be a few occasions where you will wish you had used a few of those precious skill points to enhance it.

Level Description Points Req.
UNTRAINED You can swim like the average person. N/A
TRAINED Swimming speed and lung capacity increases slightly. 675
ADVANCED Another slight increase in speed and oxygen capacity. 1350
MASTER Your name is Aquaman. 2250

Weapons: Demolitions

Ah, the fun stuff.  As you guessed, this skill deals with the things that go boom: LAMs, Gas Grenades, EMP and Scatter Grenades.

Level Description Points Req.
UNTRAINED You can throw grenades, attach them to surfaces, or disarm ones you find attached to surfaces.  N/A
TRAINED You can throw grenades farther with more accuracy and more easily disarm them. 900
ADVANCED Another increase in distance and accuracy, you're like a one-man bomb squad. 1800
MASTER You could bring down the Sears Tower with a single LAM. 3000

Weapons: Heavy

Heavy weaponry consists of Flamethrowers, Rocket Launchers, and experimental Plasma weapons.  This is for those who like to make their presence known several miles away.

Level Description Points Req.
UNTRAINED You can use heavy weapons, but your movement is slowed and accuracy is low. N/A
TRAINED Accuracy and damage increased, you can move and reload somewhat faster. 1350
ADVANCED Another increase in accuracy, damage, movement and reloading speed. 2700
MASTER People will refer to you as Arnold when carrying big guns. 4500

Weapons: Low-Tech

Melee and extremely close-range weapons fall into the Low-Tech category.  However, they can be deadly in the hands of a master.  Besides, isn't it always more fun to beat an enemy down with a crowbar than to shoot him?

Level Description Points Req.
UNTRAINED You can use Knives, Crowbars, Swords, Pepper Spray, and Prods. N/A
TRAINED Your accuracy, degree of damage, and attack speed slightly increase. 1350
ADVANCED Another increase in speed, damage, and accuracy.  2700
MASTER They will never know what hit them, most likely because they'll be dead. 4500

Weapons: Pistol

No matter how far weapon technology advances, nothing can replace the good ol' pistol.  In Deus Ex you can use the standard issue 10mm pistol, a silenced variant, and the mini-crossbow for a quick takedown.

Level Description Points Req.
UNTRAINED You can use all pistol-type weapons. N/A
TRAINED Your accuracy and damage increase, you can reload faster. 1575
ADVANCED Another increase in damage and accuracy, reloading time decreases further. 3150
MASTER Do you feel lucky, punk? 5250

Weapons: Rifle

It's a jungle out there and hunting season is open.  Rifles will allow you to take down your opponent from a distance without being spotted.  If you don't feel like a firefight or are low on ammo, you can always sniper them.

Level Description Points Req.
UNTRAINED You can use rifles, but accuracy is low at long ranges.  It is difficult to get a bead on a target. N/A
TRAINED Your accuracy increases slightly, reload time is shortened. 1575
ADVANCED More increase in accuracy, even faster reloading. 3150
MASTER The rifle is merely an extension of your arm, so reach out and touch someone a mile away. 5250
